Phases of DMAIC


The Define phase forms a foundation for the improvement project. It brings out the current status of the company, as to how it is working in current economic scenario. Problem areas are defined in this phase.

These are seen as opportunities to improve. This phase involves understanding the voice of the customer. It helps the business to understand customer expectations, requirements, trends in the market and even the strengths and weaknesses of competitors.

Using the Kano analysis and other tools Critical to Quality (CTQs), factors are identified, Big Y’s or outcomes are established and performance measures are put in place. The internal voice of the business also has to be verified keeping in mind the vision and mission of the business.

Key performance indicators are defined in this stage and are included as a part of the project charter. The project charter is designed at the end of this phase, which provides guidelines towards the achievement of organizational objectives from the project.


The company’s performance has to be measured. It has to be quantitative, and this phase involves collection of data related to various process metrics that can be used to track company growth.

Based on the data collected in this phase, further decisions have to be taken. Financial performance is an important indicator of growth and is reviewed to enable future steps to be taken towards improvement and growth in market share.

To formulate business strategies, it is not just sales and related factors that need to be measured, but it also other issues such as employee turnover, engagement, safety statistics etc.

These are equally relevant, as they form an important part of the strategy aimed at achieving high profitability and productivity.


A careful analysis of both the business and market is critical to developing a strong strategy. This helps to find opportunities, strengths, weaknesses and threats or risks involved in the business.

This analysis involves study of data collected in the measure phase. Some commonly used analyses are: ROI, net present value analysis, price/ earning ratio analysis and so on.

I wanted to get some tips and opinions on building an informational website. Is this a good niche? By information I mean just about anything dealing with information, such as articles, ebooks, etc. Maybe promoting other websites, etc. Oh, and also selling things such as ebooks, regular books, cd’s, dvd’s etc. Is this a good market? I used to be an email marketing Account manager for 4 years, as such I have immense knowledge strategy & experience in sending all types of email campaigns.

The problem i have is that I dont hold any official marketing qualifications and generally get overlooked for email marketing exec roles as a result. I end up being in roles that are part sales/part marketing.

It gave me new ideas of what I should be doing on my own websites and for my online business. And I have already implemented a few of them this morning.

Unlike the cover, the content is very up-to-date. It was actually published in 2008. I particularly liked the style of the content inside the book. It is very clear. Very easy to read. Very useful. And it inspires immediate action. There are tests, checklists and to-do lists at the end of each chapter to help you master your online marketing.

This book is perfect if you are just starting an online business or if you feel you have let your current online marketing slip and need to review your strategies. This book is a kind of inspiration workbook for you to set up your online marketing strategy. It guides you to decide where you should spend your time to make your business a success.

It is obvious the simplicity within the book is distilled from expert knowledge and sound business practices. A lot of thought and expertise went into writing it.
